Sustainability

ESG and sustainability are an integral part of business today. All organisations have a responsibility to protect the environment for future generations and support stakeholder communities. At Batt we relish this responsibility and have continuous improvement plans in place across our business to advance sustainability.

Decarbonisation

Decarbonisation is the process of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with business operations. Our goal is to transition to a low-carbon future and help limit the effects of climate change. We have a highly ambitious and exciting programme of estate upgrades underway, which will significantly reduce our building emissions and carbon footprint, as part of creating best in class facilities.

Electrification and Energy

The electricity supply to Batt Cables UK sites is from 100% renewable energy sources. To improve energy efficiency and further the move to cleaner energy, we are electrifying our mechanical handling equipment fleet. And we’re making substantial investments in new machinery, reduce energy consumption and optimise operational efficiency.

Commercial Transport Fleet: Emissions Reduction

As a distributor, we’re always on the move, delivering our products to customers on time and in full, every day. In line with our decarbonisation aspirations, we’re continuously working on ways to reduce transportation emissions.

Batt employs a number of bulk transportation options, which means we can tailor our service to customer needs precisely, as well as optimise route and load planning to minimise miles covered and number of vehicles used, which lowers emissions.

Our new company car fleet is a combination of full electric and hybrid low emissions vehicles. As vehicles are replaced we are phasing out diesel and ICE (internal combustion engine) power, a process we aim to complete by 2028.

Material Usage and Waste Management

Batt is driving circularity and sustainability in our operational processes to deliver environmental benefits for the business and our customers.  We are working closely with our waste management partners to segregate excess and unusable metal, plastic and paper/wood into respective material re-use value chains.

Cables are transported on wooden drums of various sizes.  We have recently introduced  staps to secure cable on drums rather than plastic wrapping, which significantly reduces the amount of single use packaging consumed in the distribution of our cables.

Once all cable has been consumed, drums are collected by Batt from customers and returned to our sites for re-use. If a drum can’t be re-used, the parts are stripped and taken to make new drums in our warehouses, minimising the amount of virgin materials required in the production of drums.

Process Management

Robust process management enables the business to fulfil its social responsibilities. Batt is fully ISO 14001 certified – the most important standard in the ISO 14000 series of environmental management standards. Certification helps us to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and cut waste management costs.  Batt is also ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety management system certified, which provides a framework for our organization to manage risks and improve OH&S performance.
